Rochford District Council’s new "Maximise Recycling Scheme"

The Councils new Maximise Recycling Scheme starts on July 21st 2008 and was developed as a result of the clear need for the expansion of the range of materials that can be recycled at the kerbside.

It is clear that there are a number of environmental reasons for introducing more recycling to Rochford. Landfill sites are rapidly filling up and the decomposition of bio-degradable materials in landfill sites can leas to the production of methane - a harmful greenhouse gas.

The new scheme involves three bins – a green one with a yellow lid for compostables, a grey bin for recyclables and a grey bin with a purple lid for non-recyclables. (The grey bin which will be used for recyclables, is the bin currently used for general refuse).

The Compostables bin is used for the collection of food and garden materials, the Recyclables bin is used for the collection of paper, cardboard, tins and cans, glass and plastic and all remaining materials should be placed in the Non-recyclables bin.

Each week the compostables bin is collected along with either the recyclables bin or the non-recyclables bin on alternate weeks.

From 16th June 2008, two additional bins were delivered to each property. These are the Compostables and the Non-recyclables bins.

On the week commencing 21st July 2008, the new recycling service started with collections of compostables and non-recyclables. The following week compostables and recyclables are collected, and so on.

Code of conduct

Please follow these simple points in order for your collections to run smoothly and efficiently:
• Ensure your wheeled bins are left inside the boundary of your property at the point closest to the highway by 7am on your collection day
• The collection crews have until 5pm on your collection day to collect your wheeled bins.

Ashingdon supports youth football     8th July 2007

In 2007, Ashingdon Parish Council made arrangements for the application and eventual supply of funds from the Football Foundation to local football with the help of Essex County Council. The Parish Council matched the funds available and in so doing, doubled the amount awarded to Ashingdon Youth Football Club who provide football for several hundred local boys and girls from 5 up to 17 years of age.

On 7th and 8th July 2007, Ashingdon Youth Football Club held a football festival weekend at their Cherry Orchard Lane grounds for several hundred young people from their own teams and from visiting teams from all over Essex. All of the children enjoyed themselves and spent a fun time of playing and watching good football during two days of excellent weather with sunshine, a little wind and blue skies. The event was well organised and featured many other youthful means of enjoyment including bouncy castles, climb and slide attractions, skill galleries, targets and side shows.

At the end of the Sunday matches, the youngest players received medals for their efforts and good football. The medals were handed out to every girl and boy who played by Councillor Peggy Shaw, the Chairman of Ashingdon parish Council accompanied by Councillor Glen Dryhurst. Photographs of the Footbal Festival are shown in our Photo Album.

Ashingdon Parish - Innovating and improving     August 2007

The Ashingdon Parish Council is striving to provide more activities in Ashingdon and South Fambridge for young people, we are working in partnership with the local Police and with our neighbouring Parish Councils. In response to requests from local youth, we are negotiating with the Rochford District Council to provide BMX bike dirt ramps inside the King George’s Field. If this project is successful, we intend to provide more facilities for youth.

We recently received some publicity regarding our new “Graffiti Wall” which is a mural painted on the large east wall of The Ashingdon and East Hawkwell Memorial Hall by a well known local graffiti artist. The full colour painted mural depicts Ashingdon “then and now”. A reporter came from a local newspaper for the story and a photo shoot of our Chairman, our Parish Clerk and some Councillors in front of the work of art which depicts the Vikings in Ashingdon one thousand years ago and the young people of today.

Ashingdon Youth Football Club is a large and respected provider of football sports activities for our local young people. They approached us for assistance and we were pleased to support their application for funds from the Football Foundation as a result of promotion of this from The Essex County Council which our Parish Council passed on. The Club wish to gain funds to improve their Club, their club premises and their grounds, as well as to provide for equipment, maintenance, training, balls, goals, nets, team sportswear, toilets and a larger electricity generator.

We are working with the Ashingdon and East Hawkwell Memorial Hall to help improve the Village Hall and its car park. We wish to make both safer and more secure. These proposals will be done at no cost to the Hall which operates as a charity managed by The Hall Committee, who manage and maintain the hall which is our “war memorial” for Ashingdon Parish and for East Hawkwell, which is just over the road opposite. The Hall is our memorial to honour the memory of the men and women who died for their country in wartime. We will be improving the Hall’s security by providing security devices for the doors, windows, lighting and the car park. We will be putting a gate at the entrance to match the gate at the exit, so that they can be closed when it gets dark, or after events finish, to prevent misuse and nuisance when the Hall is not in use. Ashingdon Parish Council has secured grants to cover these costs.

St. Andrew’s Church, previously called “Ashingdon Minster”, has also received assistance from the Parish Council. A few years ago, we installed floodlight illumination so that our beautiful historic church can be seen at night from many miles away, along and across the River Crouch valley. We are now helping them with the project to replace the old Church Hall with a completely new larger brick building on the same site. We have obtained a grant to assist them in obtaining planning, permissions, design and funding for this project, which could include a permanent office for the Parish Council.

Grants were won to provide for four new notice boards to be placed throughout our large spread-out Parish. Grants have also been obtained for the installation of two new bus shelters in The Parish, all at no cost to the rate-paying Parishioners.

In addition to the special projects described above, we are the first point of query, information, complaint and reporting by The Public. We also carry out our usual tasks of protecting and improving local rights of way. We liaise with The Essex County Council on roads, pavements, footpaths, public transport, mobile libraries, hedge and verge cutting, etc. We liaise with The Rochford District Council on many matters. We monitor local planning issues before they go to the Rochford District Council, we plant and maintain roadside verges, we remove litter, we provide and maintain street lighting, bus shelters, benches and much more.
