What is the Code of Conduct?

Every Council is required to adopt a Code of Conduct that sets out the rules governing the behaviour of its members.  All elected, co-opted and independent members of the Council are covered by the code.

Complaints and investigations against Councillors and Co-opted Members

Under the Localism Act, with effect from 1st July 2012, Tendring District Council's Standards Committee were given the responsiblity for considering any complaints that a District Councillor or co-opted member or a Councillor or co-opted member of one of the Town and Parish Councils situated in the Tendring District may have breached the Code of Conduct.

Instead of complaints being sent to the Standards Board for England, complaints are now made to the local Standards Committee.

If you want to submit a complaint about the conduct of a District Councillor or a Parish or Town Councillor of a Parish Council situated within the Tendring District, you must submit your complaint in writing.

Full details of the complaints process can be found here:

Please note that the Council’s Standards Committee can only deal with complaints about the alleged behaviour and conduct of Councillors. It will not deal with complaints about any matter a councillor does as a private individual, or with complaints about any of the District Council’s departments or council policy or Town and parish council decisions or policies. It will also not deal with any complaints about a Parish or Town Clerk or other matters not covered by the Member’s Code of Conduct.

If you are unsure about any aspect of the process, please contact the Monitoring Officer before submitting any complaint(s).
