Broomfield Parish Council
Broomfield Parish Council serves the civil parish of Broomfield, within the Borough of Chelmsford, in the County of Essex. To the south the Parish abuts the suburban boundary of the Town of Chelmsford; to the west the rural parishes of Chignal and Great Waltham; to the east the rural Parish of Little Waltham and the suburban Parish of Springfield.
The area of the Parish is almost 2,000 hectares, the bulk of which is under cultivation. The population of the Parish is concentrated in an area of 747 hectares along the length of Main Road, Broomfield. The Village is ‘home’ to Broomfield General Hospital, which serves an area of some 75 square kilometres. A Village Primary School with a roll of 315 and a Secondary School (roll 1,000). Both schools currently have Foundation status. The Secondary School (Chelmer Valley High School) serves a catchment area of approximately 20 square kilometres.
There are a number of shops within the Parish boundary the largest of which is a Co-operative store, others are of ‘corner' shop variety but include an general store, newsagent and butchers. In addition there is a fish and chip shop and an Indian take-away.
The Parish Council have an allotment site, which is well used in addition to one recreational area. This area measures approximately 2.02 hectares and consists of Angel Meadow (0.82 hectares) which is marked out as a football pitch and is hired at weekends to the Village Football Club. The remaining area, known as the David Smith Memorial Field, provides informal recreation space.
The Parish Council was successful in gaining National Lottery Funding in 1999 to provide a flood-lit multi-use games area (MUGA) which stands on the western edge of the David Smith Memorial Field and adjacent to the Community Centre and its car park. A children’s play area is provided adjacent to the Community Centre.
