Chelmsford German Circle

The Chelmsford German Circle has been in existence since September 1990. It normally meets on the first floor of the Moulsham Mill, Parkway Chelmsford at 8:00 p.m. on the third Thursday in the month. For exact dates please check our annual programme details.

The Circle is made up of approximately 100 members. There is no official membership necessary and contributions can be paid each time one visits. The numbers attending our meetings (10 in all from September to June) varies according to the subject i.e. normally between 20 and 40 people. The number of persons on the Committee is a maximum of ten.

As our meetings are mostly conducted in the German language our organisation requires major input from German nationals living in the Chelmsford area. These are supported by English people with knowledge of the German language. The meetings are relatively informal and relaxed. There's a short break for refreshments in the middle of the evening so as members can have a chance to chat.

The Committee determine in June or July the programme topics for the ten meetings from September. Topics are agreed on subjects relating to Germany or German speaking countries and are varied in nature e.g. History, Culture, Music and matters of current interest. The programme is published on this website.

It has been usual every other year in April for members of the Circle to visit Backnang (north of Stuttgart) in Germany. Backnang is of course twinned with Chelmsford. Members usually stay with host families. In alternate years the Backnangers come to Chelmsford and hosted by Circle members.
