Closure of EssexInfo.net
Since 2005 Essex County Council has been providing the ability for voluntary, community groups and not for profit organisations to have a free website.
However, from the 31st March 2020 EssexInfo.net will cease to exist and all websites and content hosted on it will be unavailable to everyone, including you.
Why is EssexInfo.net closing?
EssexInfo was established in 2005 to provide an easy and affordable way for community organisations to have a basic web presence when there was limited ability to do so in the market. However, since then the online world has changed significantly in terms of possibilities and there are numerous ways to have an online presence, including via free and affordable website providers.
Although we have been able to sustain EssexInfo for over a decade, we've not been able to develop it significantly in recent years. To update it to offer all the modern features of other hosting providers would require significant investment.
Because of this, and because the need that we originally set out to address no longer exists – there are a large number of free and affordable website providers now – we have regretfully concluded that the service is no longer viable, and have decided that EssexInfo.net will close on 31st March 2020.
What do I need to do?
If you still require a website, you will need to make alternative arrangements for your site before the 31st March 2020. After this date your website on EssexInfo.net will cease to exist, will not be visible and you will not have access to your content as an administrator. You may wish to consider setting up a website with a new provider or using social media.
If you have content on your essexinfo.net website that you will want to keep then you will have to download it by the 31st March 2020, as you will not have access to it after this date.
Hints and tips for setting up a new website
You will need to make alternative arrangements for your site before the end of March 2020. You may want to consider:
- Setting up a new site with another provider.
- Using social media (such as Facebook page, or Twitter) instead of a website.
- Closing your site (if you no longer need it).
