NEGC Issues & Options and SA Consultation dates and venues

Braintree District Council, Colchester Borough Council, and Tendring District Council have published for consultation Issues and Options Development Plan Documents and Sustainability Appraisal’s for the proposed new garden communities in North Essex.

Braintree District Council, Colchester Borough Council and Tendring District Council have prepared a joint strategic section of their Local Plans in order to comprehensively plan for the future of North Essex. This joint section contains a commitment to meet the sub-region's housing, jobs and infrastructure requirements through the planning and delivery of three new Garden Communities at Colchester Braintree Borders, Tendring Colchester Borders and West of Braintree. Due to its cross-boundary nature, Uttlesford District Council is also working collaboratively with Braintree District Council to plan for the West of Braintree Garden Community.

The Development Plan Document (DPD) sets out the background, evidence and analysis for the site, the visions and principles for its development, issues which need to be considered during the Master planning process which have been split into three themes covering natural and built environmental issues, transport and employment among others, its community and delivery, and the potential spatial boundaries for the site.

The DPD’s are accompanied by a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) which is an appraisal of each of the garden community schemes. It appraises the different sections of the DPD including its Visions and Principles, and Spatial Boundary options, it also includes non-technical conclusions and recommendations for the DPD.

A12 Chelmsford to A120 widening scheme update

Earlier this year, we held a public consultation on proposals to widen the A12 to three lanes between junction 19 (Boreham Interchange) and junction 25 (Marks Tey Interchange). The purpose of this consultation was to seek the views of local communities and other key stakeholders on a range of options at an early stage of scheme development. Valuable feedback was received on the route options presented, the existing junctions and comments on the scheme as a whole. In addition, key issues were raised relating to other major developments in the area, environmental impacts, non-motorised user service provision and safety related issues. The independent analysis of the responses received, as well as a Report on Public Consultation will be published when a preferred route is announced.

It is the opinion of a number of those who contributed to the consultation that emerging and proposed major developments should be carefully considered before decisions are made and we agree it is important that we get this scheme right, not just in the short term but for the long term. With this in mind, the Project team are continuing with further investigations to ensure that the scheme we develop and the way it is delivered will serve the needs of the region, whilst maximising value within the funding available. Therefore, we have decided to extend our options selection assessment and expect to announce the preferred route this coming winter. The scheme website has been updated to reflect this timeline:
