Adding a Survey

If you would like to conduct a survey of members of your site or members of the public on a particular topic you can do so using the survey function.

All your current surveys will be displayed on the Survey page. When you click on ‘Manage Surveys', you'll see a full list of all your surveys - including any that have been disabled, i.e. they are not displayed to visitors on the site. Click on the title of the survey to start editing it. Clicking ‘Add a survey' will allow you to create a survey to which you can start adding questions

To create a survey

  • Enable the ‘Surveys' page from the ‘Manage Website' and ‘Use standard pages' menu
  • Select the ‘Surveys' page from the navigation menu
  • Select ‘Manage Surveys'
  • Click ‘Add a Survey'
  • Give your Survey a name (this isn't a question but the title of the survey)
  • Give a brief description of your survey
  • Decide whether you want the survey to be open to the general public or just registered users of essexinfo.net
  • Click ‘OK'
  • Type the question you want answered in the box
  • Decide which type of survey question you want. We are going to do a simple yes / no survey as an example
  • Select ‘Multiple choice (radio button single answer allowed)'
  • Click ‘OK'
  • Decide if this question can be answered by the person clicking yes or no and select ‘Yes or No'
  • Click ‘OK'

This then takes you to the admin screen for your survey. From here you can add additional questions by clicking ‘Add a Question' at the bottom of the screen and then follow the steps above from ‘Type the question you want answered in the box'.

To publish your survey onto the website click ‘Enable' in the ‘Actions' section. To view your completed survey click ‘Survey' on the navigation menu.

To enter different types of questions follow the steps above until you get to ‘Type the question you want answered in the box' then follow the steps below:

For an essay question:

  • Type the question
  • Select ‘Essay Answer (Text Area)' from the drop down menu
  • Decide whether you want the survey to be open to the general public or just registered users of essexinfo.net
  • Click ‘OK'
  • Select the size of the text box
  • Click ‘OK'

For a one line answer:

  • Type the question
  • Select ‘One Line Answer (Text Field)' from the drop down menu
  • Decide whether you want the survey to be open to the general public or just registered users of essexinfo.net
  • Click ‘OK'
  • Select the size of the text box
  • Select whether you want the response to be Short Text, Text, Number or Integer (whole number)
  • Click ‘OK'

To delete a question in your survey

  • Click on ‘Surveys' on the navigation menu
  • Click ‘Manage Surveys'
  • Click on the name of the survey which contains the question you want to delete
  • Scroll down to the question you want to delete
  • Click the ‘Delete' link
  • You will then be asked whether you are sure you want to delete the question. Click the ‘Continue with Delete' button
  • Click ‘OK'

To delete a whole survey

  • Click ‘Surveys' on the navigation menu
  • Click ‘Manage survey'
  • Click on the name of the survey you want to delete
  • Scroll down to ‘Actions'
  • Click the ‘Delete' link
  • You will then be asked whether you are sure you want to delete the survey. Click the ‘Yes' button
  • Click ‘OK'

To view the results of your survey

  • Select ‘Manage Survey'
  • Select the survey you wish to manage and the details will be displayed
  • Click on ‘By user' or ‘Summary' to view the responses
  • Click on the CSV file links to export the survey either with or without anonymous responses

Email options

  • Click ‘Send bulk mail' to send an email to users who have already taken the survey.
  • Click ‘Send authenticated link' to invite users who have not yet responded to take part
