Edme

Local malting company Edme intends to leave Mistley and sell its historic site at the heart of Mistley village to be developed for housing. The area is currently zoned for employment use in the Tendring Local plan and Edme must first convince Tendring District Council (which is currently reviewing its local plan) that a change of use is desirable. In March 2007 Edme holding company Anglia Maltings made a planning application to demolish Edme's 77-year-old, 120ft landmark octagonal chimney. The chimney had been clearly shown in its redevelopment plans and the company had verbally assured residents at public meetings in autumn 2006 that they were not aware of any structural problems with the chimney and intended to retain it. Following residents protests. Anglia Maltings withdrew the application the same month.
