Brentwood Arts Cinema Club. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring Director: Kim Ki-Duk 2003 Korea 106 minutes In a tiny monastery in the middle of a lake, an old monk takes on the education of a small child. The seasons of the title represent, and beautifully illustrate, the episodes of the novice’s life, gradually overcoming his passions and achieving selfmastery. As a tiny child he delightedly torments small creatures by tying stones to them. The old monk does the same to the child, warning that he will always carry such a burden in his heart. In adolescence the young monk cannot control his passion for a young girl and leaves the monastery, returning as a young man in trouble with the police. He is taken away but returns again in middle age when he finally takes responsibility for himself. As an old monk himself, he takes on an abandoned child and raises him as he was raised; this is the second Spring. “A work of transporting beauty” The Times Contact Eric Smith on 01277 312643 for membership details To book tickets please call 01277 200305 #

Another Night at the Opera. The evening starts with a glass of hot mull. A selection of well-loved aria from some of the most popular Operas, songs from the Shows and a sprinkling of Seasonal items. Some duets and ensemble singing amidst a number of solos. Some old favourites re-appear time and again but how long we can retain them, time will show. Each year has its own riches but the programme should be full of interesting surprises.
