A new GP-led health centre for South West Essex

A new GP-led health centre for South West Essex.

South West Essex PCT is considering opening a new health centre in Grays town centre. The proposed centre will offer the same service as local GP surgeries, but will have longer opening hours as well as other community-based health care services, such as facilities for minor operations and a pharmacy. The centre, will be open from 8am - 8pm every day of the year and will, it is hoped, complement the planned Thurrock community hospital.   You will not have to be registered at the centre to use it and one of its main benefits is that you won’t have to worry about booking an appointment in advance, or take time off work. The aim of the centre is to make it easier for everyone to access health care when they want it.

Why will it be in Grays?

Thurrock has been chosen because its population is one of the fastest growing in the area and it has the fewest GPs in the South West Essex PCT area.

Who will provide the new service?

South West Essex PCT is advertising locally and nationally for providers of the new service. People or organisations already providing health services locally (including local GPs) will be able to express an interest in running the service.  What will the new health centre provide? The new centre is due to open during 2009.  As well as GP services it may include all or some of the following:

  • Some treatment of minor injuries
  • Sexual health
  • Help for people with depression, anxiety etc
  • Advocacy
  • Some diagnostics
  • Pharmacy
  • NHS dental
  • Help with healthy living

Your views count Before we go ahead with plans for the centre we would like to find out from you, the people who will use the service, what you think. Are we planning to put the right services in there? Are there others you think may be needed? We are asking local people and local groups between 16 June and 30 September 2008.  If you would like to make comments or suggestions about the new service please contact us in one of the following ways:
