WHAT WAS IT LIKE THEN?
Ongar has been around for a very long time - as the earth works that once surrounded the long vanished castle still testify. The picture below is about 100 years old and shows a view of Chipping Ongar High Street that can still be recognized today.Although this was long before Ongar achieved its (actually short-lived) fame as the "Town at the end of the Central Line", the railway was already in existence and must have had an effect on the lives of many of the people in the picture.
