As an introduction to the new idea of posting the letters from our link institute in New Zealand on our website, a little background history may be
helpful for new members.
The original contact is unknown, possibly after the Second World War, when a Sandon resident emigrated to New Zealand.
A Mrs Timpson from Hall Lane Sandon corresponded and the first item in our archive is a card received for our 60th Anniversary in 1978. There is also a
Christmas card and envelope dated 1984.
Since 1989, when I was asked to write to Barbara Couchman from Milson WI, both Institutes have been in regular contact. She and her husband visited
Essex in 1999 and we held a garden party for them at The White House, Butts Green. Sadly Barbara died in 2001 and Pauline Dickinson volunteered to
continue the exchange of letters (now emails) with us. Many gifts, cards and newspaper cuttings have been sent and received over the years, all of which
are still on file.
This special friendship culminated in a trip to New Zealand when my husband and I holidayed there in 2007. It was all planned around the Annual Meeting
of Milson WI and what a grand welcome we received. We then continued our tour of the North and South Islands and remember our visit as the best
holiday ever in that lovely country.
Pauline faithfully sends a long letter every month with all Milson's news which from now on can be read here on our website at
(www.essexinfo.net/sandonwi) by Sandon members and others who may be interested.
