Wethersfield History Group
Essex Country Houses
The meeting next Thursday, 14th March, is an illustrated talk by Ben Cowell about Country Houses of Essex. Ben is the Director General of Historic Houses, a national organisation set up in 1973 that today represents 1600 Country Houses in private ownership, such as Blenheim Palace, Castle Howard and Burghley House. I understand that last year members’ houses involved 24 million visits by the public.
Before taking his current role in 2016, Ben worked for the National Trust, and before that for the department of Culture, Media and Sport. Ben will tell us why some important houses no longer exist and what is being done to assist those remaining, which we enjoy visiting.
Meetings are normally held in The Pavilion, Hedingham Rd Wethersfield CM7 4BZ, on the second Thursday of each month at 8.00pm
