 Shalford Local History Association

Welcome to our Home Page

We are a small group of people who wish is to record things that happened in the past in our historic village, shaping it as it now is. The village existed at the time of Domesday (1087) and even further back.

If you have similar interest  and would like to join us, then please make contact via the Chairman (currently David Cobb) or the secretary (Iris Beard). There is no subscription

 Essex Records Office
Essex Records Office, Wharf Road
Chelmsford CM2 6YT

Using the excellent resources available at Essex County Record Office in Chelmsford, we transcribe the major part of historical documents relating to the parish.
Such work has already led, in 2000, to publication by our member Dorothy Gardner's Pages from the story of Shalford in its historical setting - a North Essex village through the centuries, and also to A Walk around Shalford, a combined effort of the group

We contribute to the Community Council of Essex Local History Recorder Scheme, reporting to them such things as new buildings and changes to existing buildings and the landscape, and supply photographs of such things for the interest of posterity

St Andrews Church Yard
Having completed a record of the inscriptions on all the visible gravestones in the older (lower) part of the churchyard we have gone on to do the same for the newer (upper) level. This record is open to inspection

Village Hall Displays
We have a cabinet in the village hall which presents a changing display of old artefacts and implements illustrating how life was lived in Shalford in times gone by, We have a member licensed to use a metal detector and he is always unearthing interesting new finds. Permission to do searches on previously unexamined sites is always welcome.
We are glad to receive offers of this kind, either as gifts or indefinite loans to provide a changing exhibit of smaller items.

Old Photographs
Our member Margaret Sparks (Sleepy Hollow, Water Lane) collects old photographs of aspects of village life, people and places in Shalford and is delighted to be offered further pictures which expect to return after copying, unless the donor wished otherwise. Please make contact if you can assist in this project. At present Margaret is also extracting interesting information from old records of our village school
