Shalford Horticultural Society - 14th September 2019

newspicture04Two words sum up Saturday’s 72nd Autumn Show, “Smiley and Sunny”. It was a glorious September day and everyone spoken to were enjoying being out and part of this wonderful community we have in Shalford.

We had tables and chairs outside for refreshments in the sunshine after viewing the exhibits and before the presentation of show cups. Then the eagerly anticipated raffle which is always well supported as we try to ensure that the prizes are lovely.

Entering the hall the autumn flowers were glorious; such beautiful colours. Dahlias were at their absolute best from the huge to the gorgeous small pom-poms.

We had the biggest pumpkin ever seen and also one huge marrow weighing 20lbs!

Many people had a go at the Country Fruit Cake recipe, same ingredients but they all looked so different; some round, some rectangle.

Quite a few entries in Class 72, Homemade wine/fruit spirit – the judge may have gone home a little tipsy!

The children’s entries were gorgeous; the Christmas tree decorations were particularly lovely; a couple using fir cones which will look great hanging in the tree.

We appeared to again have lots of new people entering, many from outside Shalford which we encourage. We also had a couple of new judges recently qualified from the Essex Guild, so lovely to chat and get some of their fresh ideas.

As always huge thanks to the wonderful Bendlowe’s ladies serving the refreshments, to our judges who have such difficult decisions to make, to Alex Tanner our president for presenting the prizes, our hardworking committee who work to make these events such a success and of course to all our entrants and visitors.
