The St John's Residents Association was formed in 1965 following an initiative by Mr and Mrs Leo Jones at a time when the area, associated with St John's Church, Colchester, was being developed, to represent the interests of the growing population as it developed. Originally the Association served areas 11 and 13, known at the time as Parsons Heath and included part of what is now Highwoods. Latterly, it has restricted its membership to an area bounded on one ineside by the Ipswich Road; on another side by the railway; and on a third side of the triangle by St John's Road/St John's Close and roads leading off.
The Association is non-political and non-sectarian. It is currently active in supporting its members in matters such as law and order through active participation in the local Neighbourhood Action Panel; Council services such as transport, street maintenance and household services; together with such matters as a watching brief over local planning applications as they affect the area and making representations where a development is regarded as against the interests of local residents.
Residents are kept informed of local matters by way of Notice Boards; one at St.Christopher Shopping Precinct, the other at St John's recreation ground, where information, Notices and other relevant details are regularly posted.
