Great Totham Community Choir
The Great Totham Community Choir was originally known by the rather more specific title of Great Totham Choral Group. It soon became apparent that members found this rather intimidating and the ‘Community Choir’, with all the connotations of local people coming together through a shared enthusiasm for music and companionship, was born.
Although not a Church choir, the group is fortunate to be able to use the Church extension for weekly meetings – Wednesdays, 7.30pm -9.00p.m. – slightly longer when we are on a roll but always with a break for tea/coffee and a chat. Oh, and ginger cookies; tho’ why so many people united by a love of singing should also share a love of this particular treat is a mystery. The hall is just the right size with good acoustics, a kitchen and, in the colder weather, a kind person to fire up the heating.
The Choir has for three years led the Christmas service of 9 Lessons and Carols and, together with organists, tower bell ringers and hand bell ringers, entertained visitors at the biennial Flower Festival. This year we also gave a concert at Forresters Golf Club in aid of Church funds.
Age is irrelevant but, as a guide, we range from those who know Hallelujah from the film Shrek and those who remember it the first time round! As the group has expanded we have enlarged our repertoire: songs from shows and films, wartime choruses, carols, rounds, unison singing and harmonies. We also have brave people who sing solos …. but not soloists …. we are a true choir!
