Welcome to The Chignals, and to this the website for Chignal Smealey and Chignal St James, two small parishes near Chelmsford.
Until the last century, the Chignals had always been small farming communities and are documented well, as such, in the Great Survey of 1086.
Today, life is considerably different in the Chignals, as most of the houses are now occupied by people who work outside the parish or are retired.
However, our active community is proud of its heritage and hopes that through this website, you will have the opportunity of glimpsing life here.
