JULY: Chignal 4 Art welcomed another new member this month; she lives a few miles away so clearly our reputation is now preceding us! This lady had attended a watercolour workshop at Hylands House recently and she talked us through her very interesting day there.

At the July meeting Myra first demonstrated some watercolour techniques, showing how to build up layers of colour from the background to achieve depth, and different techniques to describe foliage. As her inspiration for the demo she had chosen woodland on a bright summer’s day, which was very appropriate as Thursday must have been one of the warmest days of the year.

Next we were shown how to draw and paint a simple Essex landscape. Then we were given some very different ideas as possible starting points– printing using painted leaves and berries pressed on to the paper, and a clever abstract design created from nothing more difficult than wavy lines drawn down and across the page and the resultant shapes filled in with various colours. For a subject to draw or paint we only need look outside, as the village hall has really beautiful views.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The art group meets on the 4th Thursday of the month at the village hall, Chignal St James, between 12 noon and 4pm (feel free to arrive and leave at any point between these times).

If you arrive at 12 bring a packed lunch; tea and coffee are provided free. The cost is £2 each time you attend to cover the cost of the hall.

Aspiring artists of all abilities are welcome. No one will criticise or ridicule your efforts - we've all been beginners at some point. Each month Myra (or another member) will give some ideas about painting techniques or suggest something you might like to attempt but you don't have to take up these ideas - you can do whatever you like! Some paper and paint etc is provided until you can buy your own equipment.

Why not bring along your own photos, some flowers or items of interest to paint or draw? We always have books on art topics available to inspire us. Sometimes members bring flowers from their gardens to inspire everyone, as in our photo at the top of the page.

The aim of our group is to be friendly and relaxed. Hopefully you will produce some art but the main aim is enjoyment.

Some ideas to get you going:

1. Look at a good variety of art books

2. Visit art exhibitions. There are many in the Chelmsford area during the year, including Writtle, Great Waltham, Maldon, Danbury, Boreham and Purleigh, as well as Chelmsford Art Society which exhibits in Great Baddow

3. Be inspired by greetings cards and paintings for sale in galleries and art shops

Either just come along, or call Myra Wilkins on (01245) 440659 for more information.
