Summer Reading Scheme at your local library

The Reading Agency and Southend Libraries present Mischief Makers: Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Join in the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries | 21st July - 1st September 2018

Taking part is easy and it’s totally FREE. Children aged 4 years+ just read 6 or more books from their library during the summer holiday.

It’s great fun and children return to school after the summer break as more fluent, confident and happy readers.

How it works:

  • Choose your books from any part of the Children’s Library
  • On your next visit talk to us about one of the books you have read
  • If you like, write a review of one other book or draw a picture
  • Collect stickers but watch out, some of them are smelly!
  • Look online for recommended books to read, take part in competitions or play games
  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your holiday reading!

 Awards for reading:

  • On joining: Joiner sticker
  • 1st book: Beanotown Map and sticker
  • 2nd book: Sticker
  • 3rd book: Sticker
  • 4th book: Colour-in Glasses and Sticker
  • 5th book: Sticker
  • 6th book: Sticker, Certificate, Gold Medal and Swimming Voucher
  • Plus Free Entry into Prize Draw for: Southend United Tickets, Adventure Island Ticket, and Cliffs Pavilion Pantomime Ticket

Summer Read for 10 - 18 Years Old

magiNation - Turning Reading on it's Head

Character on Book

Southend Libraries are calling all young people aged 10 -18 years to take part in ImagiNation, “Turning Reading on its Head”. This Arts and Reading activity runs in all libraries in the Borough from 14th July - 1st September.

It’s free to join and everyone who takes part will receive a small gift. There is also a chance to win a pair of Beats by Dr Dre Headphones.

The aim of ImagiNation is to enjoy reading over the summer and then get creative! You’ll get a log when you join, with activities to choose from to help you express your ideas about what you have read, or record how a book made you feel. You don’t have to be ‘good at drawing’ and you don’t have to write lots if you don’t want to: instead you could paint a picture, take a photo, write a poem, and use music…. anything creative that sparks your imagination.

Southend Libraries are very pleased to be able to offer this free activity to Young People and hope to see as many as possible take part during the summer holidays.

Imagination is a partnership project between the libraries in the East of England, supported by the Arts Council England. Visit the Imagination East website for more details.
