Turning the key on burglars
By Press Officer
People across Essex, and especially those in the south of the county, are being urged to think home security and “turn the key” if they want to avoid becoming burglary victims. The police advice is aimed at all homeowners, but specifically those with uPVC doors who mistakenly think they are locking them by turning the handle up when indoors. With house burglaries on the increase nationwide, detectives are looking to work with people in a bid to halt the problem in Essex. In the first 17 days of this month (August), there were 45 house burglaries across the Basildon district in which, for the majority, thieves have simply pulled down on the outside door handle to disengage the security mechanism before releasing the door open using a screwdriver or other similar implement. They have then entered and stolen an array of electrical items, mobile telephones and money. Tara Shepherd is one detective based at Pitsea police station. She has spoken to several victims who have not realised the security pitfalls of the uPVC door. “I attended three burglary crime scenes in just one morning in the Laindon area where professional crooks had entered the unlocked house overnight, while the owners were asleep upstairs, and peacefully ransacked the lounge and kitchen,” said Dc Shepherd. “These burglars are at it all times of the day and night, targeting neighbourhoods, walking through streets, trying each door, entering unlocked ones and filling their bags. It’s so simple for them. “It’s painful for us to have to tell victims the awful truth. It’s a nightmare for them as they have to cancel bank cards, replace locks and reflect on the invasion of their home.” “We need them to physically lock the doors using the keys to activate the deadlock. By doing so, the door cannot be opened from the outside. The key must then be removed and kept in a safe place for just family members to access.” In the first 17 days of August 2008, there were 60 house burglaries. Despite this year’s 25 per cent comparison reduction where police have managed to stem the rise in Basildon, officers remain intent on arresting criminals as well as ensuring they don’t strike in the first place. Neighbourhood policing teams are helping in the fight through their 3VP patrols which look to secure property, premises and save vulnerable people from becoming victims. Dc Shepherd added: “We’re doing our bit to take these criminals off the streets and put them behind bars. We now need people to play their role in crime reduction by turning the key and pushing the door in the face of burglars.” People living in Basildon can obtain free security advice from crime reduction officer Mick Armstrong at the police station on 01268 244032.
