Management of the Fenn
Major maintenance work on the Fenn is carried out by contractors working for the Town Council. This includes monthly mowing of footpaths and the annual hay cut in accordance with the management plan drawn up by Essex Wildlife Trust. If you wondered why the contractor does not cut all the fields each year it is because the management plan recommends that one field is left uncut, on a rotation basis, for the benefit of the insect species on the Fenn. From time to time the brackish pool to the north of the railway line needs to be dredged to ensure that it does not dry out in the summer.
Much work is carried out by volunteers under the leadership of the Wildlife Trust Honorary Warden Bill Thomas. The majority of this work is to control the dominant shrub and tree species in particular blackthorn and willow
