COME AND JOIN US!!! THE STOUR LADIES CLUB MEET ON THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH IN WRABNESS VILLAGE HALL; ALL ARE WELCOME....SOCIAL TIME, SPEAKERS, ACTIVITIES.
Some of you might be wondering what has happened to the Women’s institute in Wrabness so we are writing to let you know that it is magically transformed into: Stour Ladies!!
Leaving the national WI was, and remains, a difficult decision for some of the members because the WI had been in the village for over forty years. The reasons for suspending our membership were financial, in that half of the subscription paid by members went straight to Essex Federation without anything in return and social, inthat much of WI activities and approach hadn’t really changed for decades and some aspects felt very controlling and patronising for women today. In particular, the structure of the WI as a charity prevented our spending the money subscribed by our members in the way that we wanted, including not being able to actively support local charities and community causes. The group made the decision together and are very grateful to the out-going committee for navigating the transition.
Stour Ladies aims to be a place where all women can relax and enjoy social time together, but also with an opportunity to learn new things, either from an invited speaker or by sharing skills with other members. We will be outward looking and proactively support other community ventures and charities. We are keeping the format of monthly meetings (third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall), usually with a speaker, and there is a very informal coffee morning every month at member’s houses (second Wednesday morning). The various sub groups are still active and are open to all: Knitters and Stitchers; the Book group; and Ladies who Lunch (or breakfast, or tea!)
