Chelmsford Cycling Action Group News in Brief

Cycle parking hoops around city centre

Hoops for supporting/locking cycles have been fixed to suitable existing posts in Moulsham Street, New London Road, Duke Street, Broomfield Road and Springfield Road.

County Council small schemes

The County officer says some small-scale improvements should be implemented soon. For example,  dropped kerbs where path crosses Martingale Drive, Springfield; easing staggered barriers in Beardsley Drive, Springfield.

Please can members let CCAG have details/photos of any other small improvements that might be requested on the list of possibilities.

"Sheffield" parking stands have been installed near Lakeland and Wilkinson.

Cycle schemes agreed for design

The Local Highway Panel has agreed the five cycle schemes County officers recommended them for implementation.

  • New London Road Subway access improvements
  • Rainsford Road, Civic Centre to Parkway, contraflow
  • Odeon Subway into Rochford Road          (Completed in Feb 2014)
  • Chelmer Village Retail Park access
  • Eastern section of White Hart Lane (rail bridge/Sainsburys)

Cycle schemes option investigation

Essex Highways are investigating options for several schemes. If you have any suggestions about them, please let CCAG know.

  • New Street – key issues are 2-way use at Victoria Road and Rectory Lane junctions, plus whether to make 2-way route on one side of the street.
  • Broomfield – looking at alternatives on west side of Main Road, Broomfield from School Lane to High School.
  • Baddow to City Centre – looking at options around Marriages Mill.

Station parking and cycle repair shop

Greater Anglia have developed a “Cyclepoint” by the viaduct in Park Road. It includes Falco two-tier cycle racks under the arches (secured) and outside (unsecured), plus some “Sheffield” stands intended to replace the stands around the station to be removed. CCAG have noted that in trials of 4 different makes of two-tier racks arranged by Cambridgeshire CC, “Bellsure” were preferred.

The Cyclepoint includes a cycle shop.

Greater Anglia have also removed cycle parking from the arches near the taxi rank.

Cycle Vision document

Simon Mouncey has offered to draft a document setting out a vision for improved cycle facilities in Chelmsford. He also proposed organising a related event in the “Changing Chelmsford” Ideas Festival due to be held this autumn.

CTC is pleased to announce that weekly led gentle cycle rides are re-starting on Thursday 2nd May, 10am from Riverside Ice and Leisure. The emphasis is on fun and the rides are open to everyone, especially those who haven’t been on a bike for years. We usually stop for a relaxed coffee and there’s always time to chat while cycling.
