Chelmsford was awarded city status in 2012. The borough covers 132 Sq. miles and has two towns, the principal settlement Chelmsford in the centre and South Woodham Ferrers to the south east. The north west of the borough is predominantly rural. Villages are found throughout the borough. The area has 25 parish and one town council.
