The Friends

The Friends of the Galleywood Heritage Centre has been set up to help raise funds for the Centre by running events and also seeking corporate sponsorship and grants.

AMBITIOUS plans to convert an old Borough depot, originally part of the grandstand, to a Heritage Centre at the former Galleywood racecourse got under way at the end of 2008 and the Centre was officially opened by the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Tony Sach, on 14th November 2009

The building has been transformed into a permanent home for the extensive photographic collection of the late Ron White, while the green surroundings have become a safe haven for visitors. The Centre is in the middle of Galleywood Common where the racecourse was almost as famous for racing as Ascot until the Second World War, and had been a contender for running the Grand National.

A successful day nursery is in adjacent buildings and the heritage project team has already created a tearoom. Unless the building is required for private function, the Horseshoe Tea Room is usually open on Tuesdays, Tursdays and Sundays, staffed by volunteers.

The Centre has its own car park and when the HorseshoeTea Room is open the Centre can be accessed via a rear pedestrian gate adjacent to the main  car park on the Common.

Volunteers are still needed to help with future projects.
