150 participants from companies across Essex came to try their hand at a series of 14 sports, including fencing organised by ourselves. Each team had 5 minutes for tuition and kitting-up, then competed for 15 minutes - in turn at Rounders, Badminton, Sitting Volleyball, Golf Frisbee, Archery, Petanque, Lacross, Handball, Streetball (basketball's cooler brother), Bat & Trap (from - ahem - Kent), and Fencing.
Each half hour a klaxon was sounded. This ended each pair of teams existing competition, for them to move onto their next sport. We then had just 5 minutes to both kit-up and instruct from scratch another 10 newcomers before another siren sounded for the next battle to commence!

We'll now be checking whether there is a Guinness World Record to be claimed, for the shortest time taken to teach someone to fence.

Maldon Council won the fencing, and came second overall.

2012 Olympic Open Weekend Priory Park was the setting this year for Southend’s 2012 “Open Weekend” – a free event for all ages that was designed to be a part of the national Open Weekend celebrations of three years to go to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, supported by BP, the Premier Partner of the Cultural Olympiad.

Over 4,900 people visited the Southend 2012 Open Weekend and many took up the chance to have a go at things like Fencing that they’d never tried before - or to simply relax and enjoy the entertainment and sunshine in the lovely surroundings of the park.
