Public Open Space - Land at Oxford Meadow

Following a notice placed in the local press the Parish Council logged its objection to Braintree District Council regarding the transfer from BDC to Greenfields Community Housing of the land at Oxford Meadow. The site of the former Scout hut and village nursery/playgroup is recognised as public open space and an important village amenity.

SHPC have subsequently been informed that although BDC considered the objection to the proposed disposal and SHPC's subsequent offer, BDC have decided to continue with the  proposed transfer of land at Oxford Meadow to Greenfields Community Housing Ltd. for the provision of affordable housing. BDC have stated that they consider that the disposal of the open space is considered reasonable. Braintree District Council have made this decision despite representations from both SHPC and local residents to maintain the land as Public Open Space.

A Village Green application is still being determined by Essex County Council following an application by local residents.

Awards for Sible Hedingham

On Wednesday 10th July 2013 Chairman Gill Massey and Vice Chairman John Skittrall attended the AGM of the Rural Community Council of Essex where the winners in the Best Kept Village and Village of the Year competition were announced. Sible Hedingham was given a Merit Award for Best Kept Village and was Highly Commended in the Village of the Year section. Best Kept Village is self explanatory and is judged in five categories, depending on size of village. Village of the Year recognises community involvement and we were able to demonstrate how our various new initiatives - Breakfast Club, Film Club, Legacy Day, Farmers Market, Riverside Walk etc have benefitted the community. We are extremely pleased with this result as the competion was open to every Essex Village and  included Southend, Colchester and Chelmsford areas  among others.

Work starts on Hedingham Riverside Walk

Walkers in Sible Hedingham will soon be able to enjoy riverside rambles when an uneven and often muddy path beside the River Colne is given a new lease of life.

Braintree District Council, in partnership with Sible Hedingham Parish Council, is leading the project which will see a £60,000 investment into the village’s riverside landscape. The new all-weather path will enable walkers, as well as those with push chairs and wheelchairs – to use the riverside path all year round.

Cllr Wendy Schmitt, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “This is great news for the Hedinghams – the new river walk will make the most of the village’s natural asset – the River Colne. It will be a joy for local people and visitors to the village to know they will be able to enjoy the tranquillity of the riverside landscape throughout the year. This is just the start of a bigger initiative to improve access even further along the river and I look forward to seeing the project grow.”

The Friends of Riverside Walk, the group of volunteers who have been keeping the path clear of vegetation and rubbish since its inception in 2008, will be pleased finally to see some action.  Chairman Brian Stacey expressed the group's frustration with the slow rate of progress and lack of consultation with the volunteers in his report to Sible Hedingham's Annual Parish Meeting.  He said 'It has been a long slog to get this far and everything seems to take forever and the Group has very little influence over what does happen.'

The trees were donated by the Colne Stour Countryside Association of which Malcolm was president for many years.

Elizabeth Jones, Malcolm's widow, joined the party of volunteers who planted the trees.  A plaque commemorating Malcolm's life and work is being prepared.
