South Hanningfield is a rural village about 6 miles from Chelmsford, Essex.  The village sits alongside the Hanningfield Reservoir and its 100 acre nature reserve.   The centre of the village is situated around the Tye (village green) which is on the road junction of South Hanningfield Road, which runs from Downham to Rettendon Common and Middlemead which leads to West Hanningfield.  The Tye is bounded by the reservoir to its north and the ancient village church of St Peter’s, a short distance away on higher ground, to the north-east.  The village hall is to the east.  The Tye contains the children’s play area, the village sign, a bus stop, post box and path that leads to the Hanningfield Reservoir.
