Temple Farm Industrial Estate, Southend-on-Sea, Essex 1985 - 1988

Excavation was undertaken in advance of the development of the Temple Farm Industrial Estate of this important multi-period site. The site was first noted in the late 1970s when two Roman cremation burials were recorded by Douglas Macloud of Southend Museum. The importance of the site was fully appreciated following the discovery, by metal detectorists, in 1985 of 33 Iron Age gold staters minted in Gaul. 'The Southend Hoard', as the find became known, was declared Treasure Trove at a Coroners Inquest and purchased by the British Museum.
