VETERANS "A"

In their quest for the title in Division Two the Veterans "A" team travelled on 27th January 2008 to Colchester "B" and were perhaps slightly unfortunate to lose 4 - 5 against Sue Welham, Fred Button and Ray George.  The Brentwood team being Ray Eldridge, John Parodi and Dave Carter took the first two doubles and in between gained two singles wins courtesy of Parodi and Carter over George but the result hinged on the final doubles which Colchester took comfortably in three ends.

VETERANS "B"

Sunday 20th January saw the Brentwood Veterans "B" team entertain a Southend "C" team at St. Joseph's.  The home team welcomed Mark Allaway into the fold with Sue Body and Sue Hickman competing against Gus Heath, Linda Murray and Ken Field playing for the visitors - Brentwood enjoyed a 6 - 3 win but could not find a way past Heath who took both of his singles plus one doubles.  Four of the matches went to five ends in an entertaining contest where Brentwood's two doubles wins proved to be crucial to the final result.

The Veteran B team of Sue Hickman, Sue Body and Joyce Bassett travelled to Hullbridge on Sunday December 9th to play against Southend D in a Division Five fixture.  The team came away with a 8-1 win although the score does not indicate the how close the match was.  Only one game was completed in three ends, four went to four ends and the other four all the way down to the wire in the fifth game.  It was a very entertaining afternoon with a good standard of play from all players, with some outstanding rallies.  The home team were Bob Shingleton-Smith, Colin Barham and David Barnes

Dave Carter's passion for table tennis shows no sign of diminishing as he arranged Inter League matches on successive days - on Saturday 1st December his Super Veteran's team of George Pavitt, Ray Eldridge and Dave Carter played a Division One match against a Basildon team of Dave Kirston, Alan Wood and Bill Wall.   Somewhat predictably the result was a 9 - 0 home win with only the middle doubles going to five ends - Wood against Carter and Wall against Carter both saw the visitor taking one end but their the resistance ended.    Word has it that Carter is now considered some kind of scrooge as with Xmas approaching the visitors expected a little more cheerful fare than the cakes on offer after the match.  There was a mention of "Where are the mince pies".

The second match the following day Sunday 2nd December at Crays Hill proved to be a somewhat anti climax as the Brentwood "A" team of John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter were up against a determined Colchester "A" team playing in Veterans Division Two.   The visitors Alan Burgess and Sue Welham won both of their singles for four points and needed one of the three doubles to clinch a 5 - 4 away victory - there were three encounters where Brentwood won the first end but the Colchester players warmed to the task and took the next three ends in each.  Undoubtedly the middle doubles which went to Colchester proved to be the key game of the match.  Colchester's third player Martyn Green had a hand in that doubles win which saw Colchester triumph.

Sunday 11th November saw the Veterans "B" team of Sue Hickman, Lindsay Phelps and Joyce Bassett entertain an Ilford "B" team in a very close Division Five match that was decided in the fifth end of the final doubles which saw Sue and Lindsay win 11/9 - six of the games went to five ends in a match that was enjoyed by all.

Sumday 4th November saw the Super veterans team on the table again - this match was an away fixture with Chelmsford "A" in the Super Veterans First Division at E2V.  The home side of Ivan Chaplin, Herbie Smith and Norman Smith found the visitors of George Pavitt, Ev Lucas and Dave Carter in formidable form with the Brentwood trio recording a thumping 9 - 0 victory.  Only two of the games went to a final firth end,  Dave Carter just edging out Herbie Smith 10/12, 12/10, 7/11, 11/8, 14/12 - and the other five end encounter being the final doubles with a win for Brentwood 11/8, 11/6, 8/11, 3/11, 11/9.

Brentwood's Super Veterans team took on a Colchester team comprising of Alan Burgess, George Berry and Roger Warren - the home team played Ray Eldridge, Ev Lucas and Dave Carter.    Brentwood quickly had the match in their pocket and went into a 5 - 1 lead taking the first doubles but then losing the first singles when Eldridge was beaten by Burgess.  Carter beat Berry and Lucas overcame Warren then the home pairing took the middle doubles - Eldridge then defeated Berry to record the home side's fifth point - Lucas lost to Burgess who had a great match and was responsible for all three of Colchester's points as he combined with Berry to take the final doubles over Eldridge/Lucas after Carter had beaten Warren.  A fine start for Brentwood in Division One and there are high hopes that they can improve on their runners-up spot of last season.

A Brentwood Veterans Division Five team of Sue Hickman, Mary Nichols and Joyce Bassett undertook the long journey to Clacton on Sunday 29th October 2007 to play their hosts and recorded an impressive 7 - 2 win over an ever improving Clacton side.   All six singles were won by the Brentwood team with Clacton taking the second and final doubles in five ends for their two points - the Clacton team Ron Dunn, Jenny Higgins and Cris Edwards

The Veterans "A" team of George Pavitt, John Gagg and Dave Carter made the short journey to Writtle for a Division Two Inter League match against Chelmsford "B" who fielded Richard Jennings, Trevor Carter and Mo Hardy.  Pavitt was unbeaten in singles with Gagg and Carter beating Hardy - Jennings overcame Gagg for one Chelmsford win and Trevor Carter defeated Dave Carter for another singles win but it was probably the first doubles win of the night that proved to be the vital point as the final two doubles were taken by Chelmsford to give Brentwood a slim 5 - 4 away win.
