Four matches to report on with last season’s Champions Hutton “A” just edging out Herongate at the Parish Hall – Django Fung was instrumental for the home side by remaining undefeated but being taken to a gripping five end battle by Neal Barker before Fung got the better of his opponent 5/11, 6/11, 11/8, 11/7, 13/11 – and in the process prevented Barker from completing his maximum as the visitor also went to five ends against Keith Phillips (1 win) and Peter Saunders (1 win) winning both in a very busy evening.  Richard Jackman also collected two wins while the usually reliable and stylish Peter Davis was unable to conquer any of his opponents – Hutton took the doubles and the sixth point in a very close match.      A week later Herongate were at home against Billericay “B” and fielded Richard Jackman, George Dianin and Dave Bassett (a welcome return) – the visitors turned out with Mark Mulley, Terry Timms and Mark Martin – Jackman was in superb form and undefeated taking his three games all in four ends – his win over the highly rated Mulley coming at 11/6, 7/11, 11/2, 11/5 – Dianin had to give best to his younger opponent Mulley in five but won his other two while Dave Bassett collected one win by defeating Martin.  The doubles was a tense affair with Dianin and Jackman up against Timms and Martin which the visitors took 13/15, 2/11, 11/8, 20/18, 11/4.  The new team on the block Selex “A” entertained a Billericay “C” team of John Parodi, Dave Carter and Peter Barratt and earned a share of the spoils with Paul Stephens unbeaten, John Stokes winning twice and Alison Gower unable to score – Carter was the star man for the visitors and his win over Stokes in five showed he has lost none of his sparkle – coming back from two ends down he forced the game to a fifth end which he took in some style 6/11, 5/11, 11/8, 11/9, 11/2 – Barratt lost two singles both in five ends to both Stephens and Stokes with Parodi losing to the same two players.  Gower had the misfortune to lose to both Parodi and Carter in five ends.    Final score 5 – 5 A week later Billericay “C” swapped Peter Barratt for Peter Brownlow and earned another 5 – 5 draw – on this occasion against their Billericay “A” team of John Webber, Neil Freeman and Guy McKenzie – far from a star on this occasion Carter failed to win a game and it was left to Brownlow to complete a comfortable maximum with Parodi defeating Freeman  and Webber for another two points but losing out to McKenzie in four – the visitors took the doubles in a five end struggle and thus record a 5 – 5 draw.              The Billericay Sports “A” team of Ray Eldridge, Keith Ashton and Mike Johnstone pulled off a 7 – 3 home win over Mountnessing “A” who had to call on the services of Chris Crooks who was playing in the second hall.   Crooks went on first against Johnston and collected a five end win but both Ashton and Eldridge came out on top in their games with him, Gordon Gatheral defeated Ashton for his one point with the usually dour Dave Finlayson pointless – the doubles went to the visitors to give them a third point.
