Community Warden

COMMUNITY WARDENS - Who are they?

Community Wardens are employed by the District Council as an extension of the 'police family'. Acting as the eyes and ears of the Council, they work with local communities in towns & villages to help improve quality of life issues. The wardens have taken on and expanded the role of the former Parish Rangers service and have good communication links with the Council and the Police.

The Warden for Bulmer is:-

Trevor Lawrence and I am the Community Warden for Bulmer/Bulmer Tye and neighbouring parishes. I also coordinate the Community Warden Service for the whole of the Braintree District.

The Community Warden Service was introduced in November 2006 to work with communities and other agencies to tackle environmental problems and help to reduce anti-social behaviour. There are nine Wardens, each responsible for their own area of the District, whose main role is to provide a high profile presence on the streets to deter anti-social behaviour and to resolve environmental problems such as litter, graffiti, fly-posting, fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, discarded drugs paraphernalia, dead animals, unlit street lights, etc.

We work closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and regularly carry out joint patrols with Community Support Officers (PCSO). We also attend parish council meetings and will be happy to respond to any concerns raised by local residents.

Please be aware that a concerted effort is currently being made by the Community Warden service and the Dog Wardens throughout the District, to identify and prosecute members of the community who allow their dogs to foul in a public place. Fixed Penalty Notice fines of £50.00 can be issued on the spot to offenders.

One of the nicer aspects of our job is to participate in and organise local events, and if you have any community events planned, that I could be of assistance in lending a hand, please contact me on the number below.

I patrol on foot and also by car (you can't miss it - it has Community Warden on the side), so if you see me out and about and want a chat, please flag me down. Alternatively, you can contact me at Braintree District Council on 01376 552525/332316.

What do they do?
A visible presence on the streets, parks and open spaces, the Wardens are working with local Parish and Town Councils and police to make the district a cleaner and safer place to live by:

  • Proactively dealing with fly tips, abandoned vehicles, vandalism and graffiti
  • Clearing litter or any other mess that they find
  • Dealing with anti-social behaviour
  • Promoting safety
  • Issuing fixed penalty notices for litter and dog fouling
  • Offering advice and support to the more vulnerable members of the community

The Community Warden role is a people role - working with people, through people and for people... and that means being out on the streets, making a difference to where you live.

How can they help me?
Your local Wardens are a friendly, non-confrontational point of contact within your community, there to offer advice and report any problems for you. They will take part in community events, promote safety, discourage anti-social behaviour and offer a link to the police and other organisations.
