Post card of Mill Cottages the Tye postmarked 1911.

Post card posted in 1923 but with a serial number close to that of the previous photograph so probably taken on the same day with the same children. According to the 1911 Census Frank Beall farmer lived there with his wife Emma, who was born in Melbourne Australia.  Their children were Guy, Margorie and Frank and servants Eva Balls and Grace Roblett.

These are the children in the previous postcard. All are wearing hats because this was before it became fashionable to wear a tan.

Postcard again of the same date as the previous two.  This thatched cottage is on the first plot north of the Windmill Public House.  The plot was called Virgin's Garden and the next was Eleanor's Garden. The chimneys of Quince Cottage and the Mill can be seen in the distance.

Post card of the west side of the Tye showing cottages that have all gone. The last to be demolished was Quince Cottage, the only one with a tiled roof, in 1991.

This post card continues up the Tye from the previous photograph. The white fence is in front of the Bungalow, at one time a school, next is Mill House and Mill Cottages. The village pump can be seen on the Tye, and the Mill, which was a grist mill can be seen behind the Bungalow. At the time of the 1911 Census the Miller was Norman Castle who was also a corn merchant. He lived there with his wife Edith and children George, Marian and John. The family had a live in domestic servant Ada Wolterton.

This postcard is from the same set as that posted in 1911, but was posted in 1915. It is a message from a mother in East Hanningfield to her daughter in Danbury saying she would meet her in Chelmsford the following day. The view is looking north towards Sumptners Farm, which is no longer visible at this angle because of the houses since built along the Common. The 1911 Census records farmer Frederick Shenstone living there with his wife Lily and children Eric, Maidie and Kenneth. Their domestic servant was Louie Vincent.

Post card of the Common looking north. It was probably the photographer's motorbike.

Another postcard of the same set. In 1911 the residents of the Rectory were Revd. Arthur Sacre, his wife Eleanor, daughters Marjorie and Eleanor and sister in law Florence Birhill.  Also living there were the cook Annie Parke and housemaids Ella Nunn and Emily Dunn.

Post card showing the northern end of East Hanningfield Tye. Postmark unclear probably pre First World War. The 1911 Census records the Horseshoes as being run by Thomas and Emily Northover who had two young children Edna and Claude.

Postcard showing the Old School which was on the site of the parish workhouse. The present school replaced it in 1972 an it has been a private residence since.

East Hanningfield School C1900. Standing at the back are thought to be pupil teachers Emily Baker who lived with her parents at the Horseshoes Inn, Alice Downes who lived with her family at Willis Farm and Thomas John Woolford who lived at Great Claydons Lodge. The teacher on the right is yet to be identified.

Although in poorer condition than the previous photograph, this was probably taken later as the younger teachers have adopted more grown-up hairstyles.
