RHFAG - Who we are

We are a very small, friendly, local archaeological group with members living in South - East Essex, particularly the greater Southend area and nearby. We believe that amateur fieldwork which is properly planned and executed can make important contributions to Archaeology and that people who are interested should be given the opportunity of doing it.

There are lots of ways to get involved including

  • research
  • fieldwork, such as

            fieldwalking

            surveying

            geophysics

            exavating

            recording

  • processing finds

If you have never done anything like this before, no problem – most of us started this way and you will always be given whatever guidance and training you need.

Our main excavation sites are at Noak Hill, just north of Harold Hill, and Canewdon but we have also excavated on Canvey Island and at Pitsea, Stonebridge and Clavering.

Processing of finds and test-pitting can occur throughout the year.

Details of what we are doing in 2016 are on our This year - 2016 page.

You can get a flavour of what we do by looking at our Photo Album section.

If you have archaeological features on your property which you would like investigating, please see our Activities section.

RHFAG has guided investigations with groups of primary school children, sixth form students and U3A groups. If you are a sixth former, practical Archaeology experience could be mentioned in a university application.

If the idea of doing practical Archaeology appeals to you and you may be interested in joining us, please check Membership and FAQs sections and contact us. We believe we offer a good combination of practical opportunities and value for money but we are a hands-on group and if you are looking mainly for talks and trips a different society may be a better bet for you.

For information: Our four previous websites were at fortunecity.com, communities.msn.co.uk, pwp.blueyonder and rhfag.org.uk. Three of these have been deleted but one, the blueyonder site, has proved difficult to remove and may appear in an internet search. As our former 2005 website, much of its information is now outdated or incorrect and it no longer represents the Group.
