St Botolph's Churchyard Gravestone Inscriptions

A group of villagers conducted a project from 2009 through to September 2010 to record the inscriptions on the permanent monuments in Hadstock churchyard and church. Also included are 2 war memorials, one in the church and one in the entrance to the village hall. This is part of a nationwide project to record this information before it is lost forever. This is a record only of the inscriptions together with a plan of where they were found at the time. It is not a record of burials nor a plan of the complete churchyard. Indeed as Hadstock was a poor parish most of the churchyard consists of unmarked graves. There are no old memorials, the earliest being 1817 with several more from the mid 19C. Gravestones and other monuments often record additional information such as the persons occupation or where they lived. They also usually have the date of death (not the burial date). The record is of the inscriptions as they were found, no attempt has been made to guess or fill in the blanks from other sources.
