History of RAFCC

The committee was set up in late 1972 primarily to provide representation for boatmen on the Roach at the newly formed Crouch Harbour Authority. It has continued to perform this primary function since that time, electing a delegate to the CHA Advisory Committee.

Also at this time, there were proposals to develop an airport on the Maplin Sands. The RAFCC were one of many groups protesting successfully against the proposal, with strong arguments about the unique natural beauty and peace of the Roach estuary environment.

The Roach area today has changed a little, but still retains these essential qualities. There are still pressures however and uncertain times due to commercial pressures and urban expansion in the South East.

The RAFCC is seeking to widen its membership and involve other groups in continuing to care for and defend this unique area.
