Hunt Memorial

The picture above shows a memorial that used to stand on the greensward by The Glebe in Coggeshall Road Feering (you can just make out the church tower to the right of the picture). It was a memorial to Captain F.W.Hunt who lived at Feering Place (then known as The Warrens). Captain Hunt was an intelligence officer with the 19th Bengal Lancers and part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. He was killed in action in 1914 at Hollebeke and was awarded a posthumous gallantry medal.

The cross was taken down as considered and a stone placed in the pavement in front of the ebnch (possibly early 1960's). This stone was inscribed but it has almost worn off so it has recently been lifted and is in storage to help preserve it. The Heritage Society would like too have the stone re-engraved and replaced as part of the village history. So how can you help?

  • Do you remember the original cross?
  • Or when it might have been taken down?
  • What happened to the cross - was it broken up as it looks like blocks rather than a solid piece of stone?
  • Do you remember the tablet being laid and when?
  • Most importantly do you know what was engraved on it?
  • Could you help in some way maybe? perhaps the engraving or help towards the stone itself?

We currently only have limited information about the cross - mainly from Mrs Fane who now lives at Feering Place - interesting but it appears to be no more than a coincidence that the 19th Bengal Lancers were known as 'Fanes Horses' (or is it?). Any information you have would be invaluable so please contact the society with any information you may have. Contact details can be found via the link on the left.

You help is much appreciated in trying to restore a piece of village history.
