hundred parishesWelcome to The Hundred Parishes, an initiative to raise awareness and enhance enjoyment of the rich and diverse heritage within an area of around 450 square miles of northwest Essex, northeast Hertfordshire and south Cambridgeshire, at the same time strengthening the protection of that heritage through a holistic approach to planning.

Our aim is to achieve the kind of benefits more commonly associated with National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty:

  • Raised awareness and improved information about the area's character and history for both visitors and residents.
  • More visitors, with consequent benefits for the rural economy.
  • Appropriate protection to ensure new developments are sympathetic with their surroundings.

Our web site >>The Hundred Parishes<< is not intended to be the one that will encourage people to visit the area.  Rather, it is designed to inform local organizations and communities of this project and to encourage their active participation in shaping how The Hundred Parishes will operate and how it will deliver benefits to the area and to its visitors.

The Essex branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, CPREssex, is actively engaged in the initiative.   To be kept updated by email, please contact hundredparishes@btinternet.com
